WTCC Hungaroring attracts crowds
06 May 2014

The popular FIA WTCC Hungary took place at the weekend and once again attracted crowds in their thousands. Local hero Norbert Michelisz was again the star everyone wanted to take pictures with and have his autograph. However in terms of racing this time it was not to be Norbe’s opportunity.

The bad weather and rain affected Race 1 although this did not stop the current World Champion performing strongly and securing another important win in his title challenge for the season and reduced to only ten points the difference with the current Championship leader Lopez. The Argentine Jose “Pechito” Lopez, always competitive followed closely in second place and Tiago Monteiro managed a good final podium place.

However the excitement and expectation was brought about particularly on race 2, when the Italian Morbidelli on his Münnich Motorsport Chevrolet RML Cruze, managed a lights to flag win, which broke Citroen Racing Team dominance in every other race this season so far. The Italian and the rest of the teams had benefitted from the Citroen cars being weighed down and this really opened up the options for the other competitors. Monteiro who had been again very close to Morbidelli throughout the race this time achieved second place and Hugo Valente in third.

With the points picked up in race 1, the dominating force that the Citroën Racing team is displaying meant they are still leading the top three places in the FIA approved Championship.

In the TC2T class, the Liqui Moly BMW team again enjoyed a splendid weekend with Pasquale Di Sabatino scoring his first win of the season in the first race, whilst team owner Franz Engstler scored his fifth victory in race 2.

The Championship will resume this weekend at Slovakia ring.
