WTCC Norbert Michelisz wins YOKOHAMA Trophy in Qatar
01 Dec 2015

The Hungarian star, who drives for Zengo Motorsports with Honda, managed to get enough points distance between him and the Moroccan driver Mehdi Bennani, to achieve his second consecutive YOKOHAMA Trophy at the FIA World Touring Car Championship.

Bennani had been catching up in the second part of the season and was only seven points behind Michelisz before the night racing in Qatar. Additionally he added a spectacular second place in Race 1, behind World Champion López, to narrow the gap even further, following some additional points from qualifying. The setting for real drama was set in Qatar - last race of the season and all to play for.

A fierce competition for the Trophy again took place between the two and Michelisz, managed a meritorious third place in Race 2, behind Muller and Ma. Although the WTCC Championship had been settled with José María “Pechito” López reigning supreme, the final race in Qatar was also going to determine the runner-up position in the Championship. Norby’s talent kept Sebastien Loeb’s Citroen unable to pass and by default, kept the French Rally legend away from the runner-up position, which went to Yvan Muller.

After the race, Michelisz offered his ever sporting and gentlemanly conduct thanking his team for the superb work and support throughout the season and was full of praise for his biggest contender in the YOKOHAMA Trophy, Bennani. “He has also been worthy of a top spot in the trophy this season, through his good driving”, he commented.

Michelisz also finished 6th in the overall Championship table.
